Gastric Outflow obstruction in 6 months old puppy

Gastric outflow obstruction (GOO) is a condition characterized by a partial or complete blockage at the pylorus or proximal duodenum, preventing the normal passage of stomach contents into the small intestine it is a common life-threatening condition in dogs and cats and needs immediate intervention , usually caused by lodgment of foreign body

History

Clinical signs

Diagnosis

GOO often present with a continues or intermittent vomiting, Vomiting is frequently post-prandial and may occur several hours after meals, indicating delayed gastric emptying

The vomitus often contains undigested food or bile-stained fluid, and in some cases hematemesis).


Clinical signs varies :

Regurgitation of undigested food -Weight loss -Anorexia or inappetence

Abdominal discomfort or distension -Dehydration -Hematemesis (if ulceration is present)

In severe cases, electrolyte imbalances


Abdominal radiograph : shows gas & food with fb material distended stomach with bony fragments

Abdominal ultrasound: Helpful for evaluating wall thickening, masses, or motility abnormalities and fb detection

Gastric Foreign body in a 6 months puppy

Gastric distension due foreign body( Robe like cord ) with sharp bone fragments

Stay sutures are temporary sutures helping in operation area manipulation isolation by adding lap sponge & another drape to prevent contamination

Incision is made midway between the greater curvature and the pyloric antrum

further more extension of the incision for better exploration and fb removal

added sponge & drape is useful in isolation and ease the removal of any unwanted material

Omentalization is very recommended to prevent any organ adhesion

Fb was consistent of multiple robes and bone and shredded towel pieces and shoe lace
