Massive Hydrometra in Cat

Overview : Hydrometra is an uterine pathology caused by the accumulation of a non-infectious, non-inflammatory, clear and sterile fluid in the uterine lumen. Hydrometra is usually caused by progesterone hormone and can be diagnosed by transabdominal ultrasonography, vaginal cytology

Hydrometra cases can occur in all species and are rarely observed in cats

in this case the cat was weighing a 6 KG and the removed uterus was weighing 3 KG

History

Clinical signs

Diagnosis

  • Gradual abdominal enlargement over 2–3 weeks
  • No recent heat behavior
  • Reduced appetite
  • No known mating, indoor-only cat
  • Not spayed, no previous pregnancies
  • Massive Abdominal distension
  • Mild lethargy
  • Mild anorexia
  • No vaginal discharge
  • Normal urination and defecation

Abdominal Ultrasound

  • Enlarged, fluid-filled uterus
  • No visible fetuses or placental structures
  • Fluid is anechoic, consistent with hydrometra (watery fluid)
